1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN
1,000 Books Before Kindergarden is brought to the 4 to 5 year old students in the Martin County Head Start/VPK programs to promote reading. This experience creates a positive lifelong love of books, an increased vocabulary, and expands these students' horizons.
During the 2018-2019 school year, through a one year grant, 482 students in Martin County Head Start and Title I voluntary pre-kindergarten classes successfully participated and completed the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. Teachers read a minimum of five books a day to the students. The students tracked their reading in journals and with classroom wall displays. At major benchmarks on their way to reading 1000 books, the students were given prize books to take home and own for their family libraries.
Each student receives spiral notebooks, bookmarks, classroom wall displays and three prize
books. The teachers and the Library track reading progress online through www.mcls.beanstack.org.
